What is Medical Nutrition Therapy?

Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT) is the development and provision of specific nutrition procedures to treat illness, injury or to prevent or delay disease or complications from disease.  MNT is provided by a Registered Dietitian who has achieved a Bachelor's of Science with course work accredited by the American Dietetic Association, a 1200 hour dietetic internship and a nationally credentialing exam.

MNT includes assessment of your medical history, psychosocial history, physical examination, and dietary and physical activity history. Psychosocial history covers your food-related attitudes and behaviors, cultural practices, living situation, resources and information about family and friends.

The purpose of the assessment is to determine your need for MNT, to set parameters and establish the best techniques for your therapy treatment and to evaluate its effectiveness.  The most appropriate nutrition modalities for you are determined based on this assessment.

How MNT can help you:

  • High cholesterol, high triglycerides, diabetes: Reduce or eliminate the need for certain prescription drugs, control or alleviate symptoms and slow disease progression.
  • IBS, reflux, GERD, food allergies: Relieve uncomfortable indigestion, bloating, diarrhea or constipation by getting to the root of the problem- likely food allergies or intolerance.
  • Psoriasis or eczema: Eliminate persistent itch and annoying skin rashes that are associated with food allergies.
  • Diabetes or hypoglycemia: Control and manage symptoms- reduce head aches, shakiness, and irritability; normalize blood sugar and weight as needed.  Prevent further serious complications.
  • Thyroid conditions: Lose or gain weight as needed, sleep better and increase energy.
  • Kidney disease: Decrease complications and prevent need for dialysis.
  • Eating disorders: Prevent or manage by changing negative ideas about food, conquering food fears and body image issues.
  • Depression: Reduce severity through proper nourishment of neurotransmitters and brain matter. Eliminate food related symptoms/allergies.
  • Heart disease: Decrease your risk of our nation's number 1 killer.
  • PCOS: improve insulin sensitivity, promote weight loss, normalize ovulation and potentially achieve pregnancy.
  • Pediatrics: Ensure proper growth and development.
  • Strengthen your immune system, increase energy, restore vitality, and bring back your zest for life!
